Written by  Nov 29, 2017

Trend Micro in its recent study has named London and Berlin as top European Capitals which are vulnerable to cyber attacks.

The study found out that most of the web printers, security cameras, network gear, PCs and webcams in the said cities are insecure exposing the users and gadgets to sophisticated attacks such as Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS).

Computer Security software company Trend Micro’s report says that Berlin has more than 2.8 million IoT which are insecure, followed closely by London having more than 2.5 million exposed gadgets.

Among the renowned capitals, Rome stands at the lowest in the chart with only 300,000 visible unsecured devices.

European city Madrid stands at the 3rd position with 1,365,736 devices being exposed followed by Amsterdam with the count of 948,516. Athens stands at 5th position with 543,425 exposed devices. Oslo’s count is 432,870 and Paris count is 416,733. Lisbon stands at eight positions with the count of 409,038 exposed devices. And Stockholm stands at 9th position with 405,810 exposed devices.

The warning comes one year after a wave of attacks to place on popular websites such as Deutsche Telekom where 900,000 web users faced disruption.

Computer experts say that more than half of the devices are still lacking patches to last years Mirai Denial of Service attacks means a broader outage can be expected at any moment in the said region.

Researchers of Trend Micro made the study based on calculating the number of exposed devices in major European cities using Shodan search engine that helps track down web-connected devices.

As many gadget manufacturers are failing to build up-front security tools into their devices, Trend Micro says that users should to take the responsibility of using such devices with utmost care.
